Paternity test findings signal rise in promiscuity

Peter Michael Four out of every 10 Hong Kong men who suspect they are not the genetic parents of their children have been proven to be correct, new research shows. The shock figure has emerged as more and more suspicious men employ the latest in DNA analysis to rule out the nagging doubt over whether or not they are the true parents of their children. The finding uncovers a large "hidden" population of illegitimate children in Hong Kong, say re- searchers. According to the landmark study published in the Chinese Medical Journal, the data shows the emerging sexual trend of one-night stands and extra-marital affairs is becoming more common in Hong Kong. Parentage tests are widespread in Hong Kong as the availability of relatively inexpensive DNA-based testing technology has increased. Anonymous testing involves the participants sending in tissue sam-pies by post using a kit specially produced by Hong Kong DNA Chips, a private biotechnology company. With new technology, only cheek swabs from both parents and the child are needed to compare their DNA profiles.Researchers who conducted the study-using genetic data from 150 families who approached them for parentage testing over the past two years - said they had discovered a "striking anomaly" that might have significant repercussions for many Hong Kong families. The team of DNA Chips scientists, led by Albert C. H. Yu, discovered that 30 out of 75 men applying anonymously for parentage testing were not the fathers of their children. Of those applying for fully documented parentage tests, 14 out of 75 men were excluded from parentage. Most of the non-biological fathers were ethnic Chinese. The data is quite clear. and convincing," said professor Yu. "Men who apply for anonymous testing are less likely to be the biological fathers of their children. "Researcher Richard Collins said fully documented testing was usually. Requested for legal proceedings, such as right-of-abode cases, child maintenance applications and inheritance claims. "Men who require proof that they are the fathers of their children may tend to apply for fully documented testing, as the results can be used to support their belief in a legal case," he said. "On the. other hand, men who are simply satisfying a nagging doubt over paternity may first select the anonymous test. "That some 40 per cent of these men are excluded from paternity may indicate a large population of children in Hong Kong whose percentage is in doubt.!' He said the impact on Hong Kong society was far-reaching. "Given the wealth and development of Hong Kong and its embrace of western values, this may further suggest a widespread breakdown of traditional conservative attitudes to family in Hong Kong in recent years," he said. This idea is supported by other data such as the increase in the number of divorces, a rise in number of terminated pregnancies, greater acceptance of pre-marital sex and co-habitation by young people and increases in the rate of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases in young adults. Conversely it may simply reflect a previously unrecognized aspect of traditional Chinese society." Previous studies had shown illegitimate children were more susceptible to child abuse, neglect and poor cognitive development, Mr. Collins added.
